Operation to combat bicycle thefts

A CRACKDOWN to combat bike thieves operating in Yorkshire’s most popular seaside resort has been launched by police.

North Yorkshire Police officers are staging the crime-fighting initiative after a rise in the number of bike thefts in Scarborough.

Operation Bikestamp is aimed at allowing owners to get their bicycles security marked, as well as providing advice to prevent thefts happening. Officers have admitted that they are having problems reuniting owners with stolen bikes which have been recovered.

PC Jonathan Sygrove, of the Scarborough Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “By getting as many bikes stamped as possible and getting people to follow some simple security measures we can make life extremely difficult for offenders.”

Bike owners have been urged to follow security advice such as using two locks to secure their bicycles through both the frame and the wheels.

Anyone wishing to get their bike security marked can call the police non-emergency number of 101 or email [email protected].
