Casting a spell

Tourism has become the lifeblood of many communities across the region in recent decades as income from traditional industries has declined.

Taking the waters in spa towns or the bracing air of coastal resorts of Yorkshire was fashionable prior to the Victorian era but the coming of the railways opened up mass tourist possibilities for the first time to people from outside the Broad Acres as well as to the workers of industrial heartlands who spent their annual week away by the sea.

Numbers of international visitors will significantly increase in coming years with the Royal Wedding and the Olympics. All those in the region's tourist industry must ensure Yorkshire is a not-to-be-missed destination.
