Creation of ‘wildbelts’ will be positive lockdown legacy – The Yorkshire Post says

IT was discernible how many people across Yorkshire were sustained by a new-found awareness and appreciation of local nature and wildlife during the lockdown.

Typified by the number of families who kept daily watch on a swan nesting on a Leeds lake before her cygnets hatched, this interest is a positive legacy from a year like no other.

All the more reason that land being restored for nature should receive special designation under the Government’s latest reforms intended to simplify the planning process.

Though such sites are small, and not worthy of designation as Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, they are, nevertheless, important to the vitality – and sustainability – of local environments.

And if the Government wants to prove its credentials on environmental matters, it will accede to calls today by Wildlife Trusts for a new “wildbelt” designation to protect natural habitats.
