Cricket's finest

AS autumn draws on, this weekend offers the chance to celebrate our summer game after weeks in which its reputation has been tarnished by ugly allegations.

It is the cricketers of our county, both professional and amateur, whom we have to thank for the chance of admiring all that is best about the game.

For Yorkshire, a trip to the seaside holds out the enticing prospect of a Lord's final.

But Andrew Gale's men will be beaten to the home of cricket by another of the county's sides, Sessay, who will play there in the Village Cup final. Reaching the final is a tremendous achievement in itself; winning it would doubtless be a dream come true.

We wish both Sessay and Yorkshire well in their matches, and hope they return with trophies to display and memories to cherish.

We believe, too, that the cricket lovers of this county will applaud two sides, who in displaying the game's finest qualities, remind us that the grubbiness of corruption is, thankfully, an aberration.
