Daffodil delight as Royal Mail honours Wordsworth – The Yorkshire Post says

THE acclaimed Daffodils poem by William Wordsworth – “I wander’d lonely as a cloud. That floats on high o’er vales and hills, When all at once I saw a crowd, A host, of golden daffodils” – remains synonymous with his beloved Lake District.

Written two centuries ago, its words are also apropos to contemporary events – national parks largely deserted and spring flowers coming into blossom, as people turn to poetry for comfort and solace.

And it is fitting that the 250th anniversary of the wordsmith’s birth has been marked by a new set of Royal Mail stamps which feature, amongst others, the works of William Blake and John Keats.

How inspiring if these stamps can encourage people to write letters to long-lost acquaintances and renew bonds of friendship that have become frayed.

After all, it would give resonance to the last lines of Wordsworth’s defining work: “And then my heart with pleasure fills, And dances with the daffodils.”
