Deserved acclaim

FROM the spectacular scenery of the Dales, to all the leisure opportunities in Leeds, Bradford and Sheffield, Yorkshire's tourist offer is outstanding. The industry faced several challenges this summer, however, with the economy stuck in the doldrums and the weather more suited to brolleys than barbecues. So its success, particularly among those who operate small attractions, should be celebrated.

These museums, galleries, gardens and tea rooms are a vital part of the region's economy, particularly in rural communities. They help to bring people to God's own county and support thousands of jobs, not just in the attractions themselves but in the food and drink, transport and cultural sectors which supply them.

As this region fights its way back to prosperity, all forms of tourism have a signifcant role to play. The industry contributes 6.5bn annually to Yorkshire and is of huge financial significance to the whole nation. That is why David Cameron recognised its importance earlier this year, when he pledged to make Britain one of the top five tourist destinations in the world.

So tonight's White Rose Awards 2010, which honour the best in the region's tourism, are a chance to recognise the hard work done at the attractions here, from the largest to the smallest. They all help make Yorkshire a great place to visit.
