A discordant note at Eurovision – The Yorkshire Post says

A talented yet perhaps not universally known singer from the Dales, it is he who will fly the Union flag for Britain just as those around him are being taken down and packed away.

At the first Eurovision Song Contest since Brexit – in the EU heartland of Holland, no less – he will be the personification of a nation that is as welcome as a dog in a game of skittles. So let’s hope his song is a good one.

In fairness, Yorkshire has a reasonable record at Eurovision. The contest was staged here in 1982, at a time when the conference centre in Harrogate was one of the largest venues in the country.

And the Leeds singer, Sandra Stevens, was part of Brotherhood of Man, the group that won it in 1976. Perhaps this year will see a return to form.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Our last entrant, one Michael Rice, finished last, and if Newman can at least better that, he will deserve a pat on the back from us all.
