A dog's life

THE bond between owners and their dogs is why they are regarded as man's best friend. The cruel mistreatment of Jack, the mongrel abandoned outside an RSPCA centre in Wakefield, however, will appal any animal owner.

How a person cares for an animal in their charge is a basic test of their humanity. In the majority of cases, pets are looked after with

a deep affection, but the consequences are shocking when owners betray their faithful four-legged friends.

Jack was let down by someone over a long period of time. This person was either too selfish or too cowardly to even take him into the animal

rescue centre. If they are ever tracked down, they deserve to face prosecution.

If there can be any silver lining to such an unpleasant case, it is that it reminds people of the essential work done by the RSPCA, and many other charities, that exist to help sick and vulnerable humans as well as animals.

They all need our long-term support.
