Live daily coverage on ITV1, headed by the ever engaging Ed Chamberlin and his team, means York – and Yorkshire – will be the beneficiaries of national, and international, broadcasts.

And the fact that the meeting has, once again, attracted many of the highest-rated horses in the world – Ghaiyyath, Love and Battaash are this year’s headline acts – is further evidence of the meeting’s global prestige.

Yet, while York and the rest of racing are acutely aware that the sport’s difficulties over reduced funding and crowds, need to be placed in the context of the wider Covid-19 pandemic, the fact that this showpiece fixture is going ahead is a reflection of the progress made since the sport began to emerge from the lockdown on June 1.
