A fine city

YORKSHIRE has many jewels in its crown, but York ranks among the very finest.

With its heritage from the Roman era, a Viking settlement and its development through medieval times to the arrival of the railways, it has unrivalled examples of every period of this island's history.

At its heart, of course, is the Minster – without doubt one of the greatest masterpieces in the country. But, perhaps, it is the warren of streets throughout the centre, hemmed behind well-preserved walls, which gives York such a distinctive character.

What is more, much of its rich history is still being uncovered as the landmark discovery recently of the remains of Roman gladiators underlines. It is these future discoveries which form a key part of York's bid for World Heritage status.

If successful, York will rightly join Fountains Abbey and Saltaire in winning global recognition and taking its place alongside the likes of the Taj Mahal and Great Wall of China.
