Firefighters and a nation’s lasting debt – The Yorkshire Post says

THE ritual sounding of sirens had even more poignancy, and resonance, on the stroke of midday as the annual Firefighters Memorial Day was solemnly honoured and marked by crews across the county and beyond.

Even though community gatherings had to be called off, it was an opportunity for firefighters to remember comrades who have died in the line of duty as well as those who have fallen victim more recently to Covid-19.

They, and the communities that they serve, need to reminding that this is a disease which makes no allowances for a brave group of men, and women, who rank amongst the most respected in society because of their willingness to risk their lives to save others.

And while the national focus of attention each Thursday night is on NHS staff and carers, the work of fire crews – both full-time officers and volunteer firefighters – has also been key on so many fronts.

This should not, and will not, be forgotten.
