Flower power

THE ingenuity of Yorkshire's gardening enthusiasts has certainly added more than a splash of colour to the annual Chelsea Flower Show – the Olympics for horticulturalists.

The 130 stunning local exhibits, all of which symbolise Yorkshire's rich and varied landscape, have become an increasingly effective marketing tool.

They range from Welcome to Yorkshire's rhubarb crumble and custard concoction to promote the region's stately homes to Leeds City Council's imaginative design that highlights the leisure potential of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal.

Each year, the designs become more and more ambitious. But the theme is a recurring one – there is no better place to spend a summer afternoon than in Yorkshire, home to the finest gardens and countryside that this country has to offer.
