Many were already doing so, anonymously, before the Cabinet Minister’s intervention which quickly became a political own goal when he realised that lower wages would deny the Exchequer tax revenue.

They’ve also not forgotten their roots – hence why Manchester and England defender Harry Maguire arranged for food boxes to be delivered in Mosborough, the Sheffield district where he grew up, as the #PlayersTogether initiative was being finalised.

And the only reason that this financial gesture was delayed was because the players concerned wanted assurances that their benevolence would go straight to the NHS frontline. For that, they cannot be faulted and it is to be hoped that others – like tycoons and wealthy donors to Mr Hancock’s party – now choose to follow suit.
