At last Pacer trains become museum pieces – The Yorkshire Post says

THE Yorkshire Post argued that the Pacer trains belonged to the National Railway Museum in York long before they were taken out of service last month.

Defining symbols of the North-South divide, it is entirely fitting that three recently-retired Pacers should make their way to the alluringly beautiful Wensleydale Railway.

And this is, in fairness, where they have long belonged – as museum pieces on a heritage railway where visitors will be able to go back in time on these rat-a-tat trains and even enjoy All Creatures Great and Small-themed tours.

Introduced on the Northern network 40 years ago, it was, frankly, an insult that successive London governments thought their use was acceptable here for so long while billions was poured into luxurious new rolling stock in the capital.

The scandal – and politicians won’t be allowed to make the same mistake again – is that it took so long for them to find a rightful role and, in the final irony, as tourist attractions.
