Mixed messages

LOUIS Wainwright, Nicholas Smith and now Lois Waters. In a matter of days, three young lives in this region have succumbed to mephedrone – the "legal high" drug that the Government seems reluctant to ban,despite a decade of tough talk on drugs.

Tragically, they're unlikely to be the last victims of this new social craze, judging by the number of people undergoing emergency treatment locally. Yet, with Parliament preparing for the Easter recess, and then being dissolved for the election campaign, it could be many weeks, if not months, before the Home Office considers the latest expert advice.

This is not good enough. It needs to act immediately. Doing nothing simply sends out the message that young people have nothing to fear

from this substance – which is patently not true as three families

mourn the loss of loved ones who have been taken from them at such tender ages, and so needlessly.
