A nation's fate: England meet Germany yet again

IF it seems destined for England and Germany to meet in combat on the football field at nearly every major tournament, this time England's fate is surely in their own hands.

Having shown the full range of their potential, from the dire display against Algeria to some scintillatingly skilful play during the qualifying rounds, Fabio Capello's men know that they have the capacity for victory as well as defeat. With the win against Slovenia providing evidence that the air has been cleared and the England camp has benefited from some strong words spoken in the wake of the Algeria debacle, the nation's hope is that the team can only get better from now on. And, considering that a likely meeting with Diego Maradona's Argentina awaits the victors of tomorrow's match, the question must be whether destiny can strike twice.
