New starters in no man's land of employment need support - The Yorkshire Post says

Chancellor Rishi Sunak promised that the Government would give this nation’s citizens “all the tools you need to get through this”, as he sought to offer reassurance during the second of the country’s daily coronavirus briefings last month.

The message was clear; the Prime Minister said the Government would do “whatever it takes” in the fight against the virus, with Mr Sunak, who took up the post of Chancellor just weeks before the first instance of coronavirus transmission within the UK, promising to support jobs, incomes and business.

To his credit, Mr Sunak has done much to help mitigate the profound economic effects of the crisis, announcing packages of support for businesses, for charities, for workers and for individuals and their families.

In particular, his historic announcement that the Government would cover 80 per cent of employee wages under a furlough scheme designed to protect jobs brought immense relief to millions that there would be a safety net allowing them to cover their bills during the pandemic.

Whilst the Government must be mindful to minimise the potential risk of fraudulent claims, nobody should be left to endure debilitating hardship during these unprecedented times. These people in a no man’s land of employment must not be left to fall through the cracks.
