NICOLA Adams is already a sporting pioneer after making history at the London 2012 Olympics by becoming Britain’s first female boxing champion before making a successful title defence four years later.

Now the Leeds heroine intends to show her fighting qualities on the dance floor after official confirmation that she is to compete on TV’s Strictly Come Dancing as part of the show’s first same-sex couple.

Fleet-footed in the ring where she rarely took a backward step, her Yorkshire effervescence is sure to be a knockout with viewers. Yet the 37-year-old’s desire to push back so many societal and cultural boundaries, while also standing up for racial equality and LGBT rights, is to be admired.

She says that “it’s amazing to be a part of the movement for change” in the entertainment industry – indeed it is one which has the power to eclipse her boxing legacy. On this basis alone, she will more than pack a punch when the gloves come off on Strictly.
