One law for all

AS the Police Federation said so succinctly, it is "idiotic" that the drivers of police cars have been issued with £30 fines for flouting rules governing the use of Bradford's bus lanes.

Common sense – a commodity which appears to be in short supply – suggests that vehicles should be exempt when they are in the process of answering an emergency call, and the appropriate cases should be

rescinded.

Where the issue is more complicated, however, is with those instances where the patrol car in question is simply returning to the police station at the end of a shift.

For, if these vehicles are allowed to effectively queue-jump, off-duty police officers – and staff working for the other emergency services – will be expecting similar favours.

Before long, the utility companies, and others, will be doing likewise and the purpose of the bus lane, to speed up journey times of long-suffering passengers, will have been defeated.

That is why the law has to be equally applied to all motorists – except those answering a genuine emergency – in order to avoid a free-for-all.
