Our green and pleasant front gardens return – The Yorkshire Post says

AS custodians of the nation’s gardens, the Royal Horticultural Society was rightly concerned at the number of front lawns being paved over – ostensibly to create extra parking spaces. It said this was one factor behind the increased prevalence of surface water flooding.

Yet, five years after first highlighting its concerns, the RHS is pleased to reports that this trend appears to have stopped and many front gardens are, once again, returning to their roots and becoming kaleidoscopes of greenery as households come to appreciate the therapeutic benefits of gardening.

These green shoots of recovery for gardens are another indication that greater awareness of the local environment, and wildlife, is one of the few positive legacies to emerge from the Covid crises. And if, as the RHA hopes, that this leads to new greenery and shrubbery that equates to 70 times the size of Hyde Park, there’s still hope yet for the very original green and pleasant land.
