Prince of peas

The majority of peas sold in Britain are from abroad and Swaythorpe Growers, a group of more than 40 farmers, are hitting back with Yorkshire Peas.

If successful, the move will not only have an obvious economic benefit for the region, but also encourage more people to buy British farm produce. Their efforts, while unlikely to ever break the supermarket stranglehold on groceries, will hopefully tempt shoppers away from goods flown in from every corner of the globe.

As Yorkshire's many renowned chefs will testify, nothing can rival quality local produce and there can be few better places to harvest quality peas than 4,000 acres of prime Yorkshire farmland.

Yorkshire's produce and the highly skilled people who make it are something to be extremely proud of – the task now is to show the rest of the country what they are missing out on.
