Her Majesty’s first public engagement outside of a Royal residence since Covid-19 struck, how fitting that she chose to meet the scientists leading the response to the pandemic while also acknowledging their key role responding to the Novichok poisonings in nearby Salisbury. Joined by the Duke of Cambridge, the Queen has not lost her sense of humour. On signing the VIP guest book, she ventured: “Well it proves we’ve been here, doesn’t it?”

But it was the observance of the two-metre rule which was so noteworthy in the careful choreography after it was deemed safe for the Queen to leave Windsor Castle – or HMS Bubble as it is now known.
