THE cricket authorities are renowned for taking an interminable amount of time to resolve the game's problems but the betting scandal that is suffocating the sport needs action to be taken quickly and decisively.

While the world waits, the integrity of the game is being dragged through the mire and future international matches – a vital source of income for counties like Yorkshire that host them – are in jeopardy as fans clamour for refunds.

Despite this, the International Cricket Council – the sport's governing body – is plodding along with its investigation and failing to communicate its plans, other than the weak pledge that there will be "some sort of a conclusion" by the weekend.

This is not good enough. Numerous players have now claimed they have been approached by illegal bookies and the ICC must take control of a rapidly escalating situation and launch a worldwide, high- profile investigation.

The penalties for such conduct should be clear – a life ban from professional cricket. Players must realise that if they cheat, they are risking their career, not just their international selection.

Many are warning that the allegations in this case are rife throughout the game, and if the ICC is to restore faith, it must not only act with speed and strength but also openness. The fans must see action being taken, for it is their continuing support that funds the game's future.
