Returning heroes

THEY are the bravest of the brave. And, as soldiers from the 2nd Batallion The Yorkshire Regiment enjoyed an emotional reunion with their families following a gruelling six-month tour of duty in Afghanistan, they deserve the public's heartfelt gratitude for their courage, commitment and the sacrifices made by those who were killed, or were seriously injured, upholding the Batallion's finest traditions.

In an irony of timing, the Batallion – also known as the Green Howards –first served in Afghanistan in 1919 when 18 Victoria Crosses were awarded to the regiment for outstanding feats of military endeavour. Many of yesterday's returning heroes will almost certainly see their names etched into this historic roll-call of honour, and deservedly so.

Separated from their families at Christmas, it was, perhaps, fitting that they should return to these parts at Easter, a traditional time of the year when families come together. It is, therefore, an appropriate moment to reflect upon the country's debt of gratitude to the Armed Forces, specifically the thousands of courageous men and women still serving on the frontline in Afghanistan, and the families of the fallen. They all deserve a special place in our thoughts and prayers.
