Rhubarb result

THE success of the Yorkshire Forced Rhubarb campaign in achieving protected name status – stopping impostors cashing in on its heritage and reputation – is a victory for all those who support quality local produce.

Grown and harvested by candlelight by 12 producers in the Rhubarb Triangle between Leeds, Bradford and Wakefield, it has now taken its rightful place alongside great names such as Champagne and Parma ham on a list of protected foods.

The Yorkshire Rhubarb Growers' Association should be congratulated for their efforts, as should the farmers whose dedication to quality throughout the last century created a reputation worth championing.

Now it is time to get behind another great name in Yorkshire food – Wensleydale cheese.

The Yorkshire Post is backing the campaign for Wensleydale to be awarded the same protection as Forced Rhubarb.

Made at a creamery in Hawes, renowned for its rich flavour and now internationally famous thanks to Wallace and Gromit, Wensleydale deserves Protected Designation of Origin status.

Stopping major companies stealing the hard-earned reputations of local producers helps to preserve quality regional food that Yorkshire has enjoyed for centuries.
