Road rage

AS the celebrated home of the Brontë sisters, Haworth is one of Yorkshire's many "must visit" tourist locations. Its charm iscomplemented by its rich history – and stunning landscape.

Yet many people are being deterred from visiting this iconic location because of Haworth's notorious car clampers. They will, of course, point to the fact that the car parks concerned are privately owned and motorists should obey the rules. But that's not the point. Many penalised drivers contend that they followed the rules correctly. And, it must be remembered, the car park operators are providing a public service.

Given Haworth's notoriety – and the obvious damage that this is causing to a community that depends upon tourists for its income – it is even more perplexing that Bradford Council, and other agencies, appear to be idle bystanders rather than working with those concerned to ensure that visiting motorists are treated fairly at all times.
