Seagulls in Scarborough; blame those who encourage them – The Yorkshire Post says

ATTEMPTS TO stop squawking seagulls from defacing Scarborough, and other Yorkshire resorts, are about as predictable as the Bank Holiday rain.

Yet, while the weather gods cannot be controlled, Scarborough Council does still have it within its gift to influence public behaviour before it is swallowed up in North Yorkshire’s forthcoming local government shake-up.

After all, grants to residents to make it harder for gulls to nest in the first place will be counter-productive when so many visitors continue to feed the birds, and actively encourage their scavenging, rather than treat them like vermin.

And the fact that so many residents – and tourists – still appear so willing to offer chips to seagulls, or leave them discarded food, suggests that current attempts to discourage this practice, a health hazard, are not working satisfactorily. As to how best to control this seagull menace, answers on the proverbial postcard please.
