A second chance

IT should come as little surprise that hundreds of our soldiers test positive for so-called recreational drugs, though the figure is considerably less than on Civvy Street.

Nevertheless, it is a serious concern that some 650 Army personnel were found to be positive in compulsory drug tests in 2008, mainly for cocaine. Thankfully, none of the miscreants were in military theatres at the time when their skills need to be at their sharpest.

Nothing should override the imperative for military discipline, which must be maintained at all costs, or threaten the effectiveness of our troops as they face the prospect of a long and bloody campaign in Afghanistan.

Yet the lenience offered to some offenders does show, refreshingly, that each case is considered on individual merit and how some soldiers are being offered a second chance.

Such pragmatism also recognises that those with drug problems may be best placed to overcome their affliction under the supervisory wing of the Armed Forces.
