THE Great Yorkshire Show has, once again, been witness to a tremendous outpouring of optimism on the part of the region's rural community.

As well as celebrating the very best in agriculture and country produce, the Harrogate showground proved to be a great meeting place for the farming fraternity.

The very nature of their work invariably means farmers working long hours, and in isolation. This is a special opportunity for them to gather and discuss the challenging issues facing their industry.

Like every sector of the economy, agriculture will be affected by the spending squeeze. Tough decisions will have to be taken, though farmers can, at least, be comforted by the fact that there is a government finally in place that has some empathy with the countryside.

Yet the commodity that will help the agricultural industry and rural enterprises most of all in the year ahead is the one that was seen in abundance this week – resilience.

They have survived past crises and they will pull through this downturn by pulling together and evoking the spirit of the Great Yorkshire Show.
