A man of many titles – and roles – the North Yorkshire landowner is the current chair of the Forestry Commission after a stint as the Government’s Tree Champion.

But it is Sir William’s involvement in a diverse range of environmental matters – he’s also a former president of the Country Land and Business Association – that offers him this opportunity to lobby the Government on the future of farming and rural economy. And this is important. For, while the public’s respect for Yorkshire farmers remains high, there is still a nagging sense that the Government regards agriculture as an after-thought.
