SOS appeal from RNLI needs heeding over lifeboats – The Yorkshire Post says

IT WAS both striking that the financial plight of the RNLI, and other lifeboat crews, should spark a rare outbreak of political unanimity at Parliament.

By the end of July, the RNLI had launched its lifeboat crews 3,143 times — equivalent to 16 times a day — saved 95 lives and assisted 584 people around the country’s coast.

Yet it also fears a 20 per cent drop in donations – bad news for a rescue service, like this region’s mountain and fell rescue teams, that are largely dependent on the public’s generosity for their funding.

As such, it is welcome that MPs from all parties, including Redcar’s Jacob Young, signalled a desire to work together on this rescue mission to ensure public safety is not put at unnecessary risk by the Covid storms.

Equally, the respectful tone of proceedings in Westminster Hall, a side chamber, was an example of how political debate can and should be conducted before MPs need rescuing – from themselves.
