On target

IT is a shame that so much of the unwelcome attention now focused on the Commonwealth Games has detracted from some of the inspiring sporting events.

The plethora of swimmers struck down with stomach bugs was the latest in a series of organisational disasters in Delhi. However, the chaotic nature of the 2010 Games must not be allowed to detract from the astounding achievements of Yorkshire archer Danielle Brown, who yesterday became the first disabled athlete to win a Commonwealth medal for England at an able-bodied games.

Typically for a young lady with such a fierce desire to win, she and her team-mates settled for nothing less than gold. The 22-year-old from Lothersdale only took up archery five years ago after watching the Lord of the Rings films. How fitting that she can now prove equally inspirational to a new generation of youngsters – and how typical of Danielle's determination that she dispensed with her crutches as she stepped on to the podium to receive a deserved medal.
