THERE was something wonderfully English and eccentric when Jonathan Agnew – ‘Aggers’ to his many fans – introduced Test Match Special from his attic.

Dressed in his pyjamas and dressing gown due to the early hour as England’s series in Sri Lanka began, this radio institution is having to improvise due to Covid restrictions.

But listeners would have been none the wiser as ‘Aggers’, Michael Vaughan and others combined ball-by-ball commentary with their whimsical musings that help make this cricket programme so appealing to non-cricketing devotees.

And it was captivating as they brought some much needed early morning happiness into the homes of all those people craving normality and the sound of familiar – and familiar – voices. “We’re going to make the best of it. We’re going to have fun,” declared ‘Aggers’ as the famous TMS calypso theme tune was replaced by the clatter of Sri Lanka wickets.

They did. This was radio broadcasting at its very best. Long may it last.
