Time to give Yorkshire Wolds protected status – The Yorkshire Post says

IT will surprise some that the chalky uplands of the Yorkshire Wolds, one of the region’s most distinctive landscapes, have not already been designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Special status that has previously been bestowed upon the Howardian Hills, Nidderdale and North Pennines, the quiet charm of the Wolds has inspired so many of legendary artist David Hockney’s most celebrating pieces of work.

And given how the gentle rolling hills of the Wolds will appeal to ramblers if Welcome to Yorkshire’s Walkshire campaign does gather pace, The Yorkshire Post endorses the campaign currently underway for AONB designation.

It appears clear that this unique area, emblematic of the wider East Riding, meets Natural England’s criteria as it considers the case. The questions, therefore, are when, not if, the Wolds is given such status – and whether they should, in fact, be renamed and rebranded as Hockney County in official literature?
