Tour de Yorkshire cancellation inevitable – The Yorkshire Post says

THE decision to cancel next year’s Tour de Yorkshire at such an early stage will clearly disappoint cycling fans in the wake of the sport’s three fabled Grand Tours all taking place successfully – and safely – in recent weeks.

Yet it is also a pragmatic one by Welcome to Yorkshire after having to call off the 2020 race earlier this year. Though Covid-19 was the justification, the tourism body is fighting for its financial future and there was no guarantee that local authorities, and others, were prepared to provide sufficient support at this time. Having made its intentions clear now – this becomes the first significant sporting event of 2021 to fall victim to the pandemic – WtY has a chance to get its finances in order, and reappraise its priorities, in the hope that the Tour de Yorkshire can return to a Covid-free county in 2022.

For, while the event has its critics, not least over funding, its value promoting Yorkshire’s scenery to the rest of the world should not be under-estimated.
