A tribute to Filey’s coastguard brothers – The Yorkshire Post says

THE lifelong stories that brothers John and Martin Haxby recount in The Yorkshire Post today are another reminder that Her Majesty’s Coastguards are, in fact, the country’s fourth emergency service.

Countless visitors to the Filey coast owe their lives to this remarkable pair who have now both retired after giving more than 80 years of proud and loyal service to their local community.

As well as their tales, they have also left incredibly big boots to fill as the Maritime and Coastguard Agency advertises for a new generation of volunteer coastguards.

Yet, while the country is supposed to be in a state of lockdown, coastguards did report a significant increase in callouts in some parts of the country over the weekend.

It was a timely reminder that the most beguiling conditions along the coast, or in the sea, mask hidden dangers at all times.

Or as the Haxby brothers put it in their own down-to-earth way: “Time and tide waits for no man.”

Editor’s note: first and foremost - and rarely have I written down these words with more sincerity - I hope this finds you well.
