Why every poppy counts more than ever – The Yorkshire Post says

THE 100TH year of the Poppy Appeal will be one of the most challenging since its inception by the Royal British Legion in 1921.

Yet, while Covid is impacting on the sale of red poppies, and attendance at next month’s remembrance events to mark the Armistice, the priceless work of all military charities is as important as ever.

Veterans, past and present, still require great care and the Covid pandemic and lockdown has increased demand for additional support from those struggling to come to terms with the physical – and mental – scars of battle.

And it is to the credit of the RBL, so conscious of the potential vulnerability of its hardy army of poppy-sellers to the virus, that it has come up with new ways for people to wear – or display – poppies as symbols of peace, remembrance and respect.

As it says, every poppy counts – even more so this year – and Yorkshire, a county proud of its military links and association with a certain Captain Sir Tom Moore, can be counted upon to lead by example.
