‘Why I believe Nick Clegg was the best MP for putting country before Lib Dems’

I AGREE with Max Hey (The Yorkshire Post, February 28) – Dennis Skinner was a good, hard-working MP. He represented those that voted for him, he was very much a socialist.

My recommendation for one of our best MPs would be Nick Clegg, he was elected in 2005 and stayed in office until 2017.

Nick Clegg formed a coalition government with David Cameron. He put his reputation on the line and that of the Liberal Democrats for the good of the country. He thought it was the right thing to do.

He did that because the country needed a strong government and Gordon Brown’s Labour failed to get enough MPs elected, even to form a government with the Liberal Democrats.

But Cameron and the media made sure that the Liberal Democrats were the ones that carried the can in the following election, even though we can now look back and compare Theresa May and Boris Johnson with Nick Clegg’s leadership, and see how the country has been in disarray since 2015.

THE Brexiteers just cannot help themselves, can they? They continue to try and lie and ‘bully’ to get their own way. Even top civil servants are no longer safe, it seems, as the top official at the Home Office resigns.

And they still try to bully our friends and neighbours in the EU, pathetically threatening to walk out of trade talks with if they don’t get their own way. Let’s be clear there is absolutely no mandate for this.

A majority at the 2019 general election voted for parties committed to a referendum on any withdrawal agreement, or to cancelling Brexit altogether.

Brexit is an attack on British traditions – and values like an impartial civil service and constructive diplomacy. The sooner it is reversed, the better!

THE time and cost of running the House of Lords has been brought in to open view by the media last weekend. As well as claiming a generous (by the majority of the population!) £300 daily attendance allowance, the 834 unelected and unaccountable to anybody but themselves, claimed collectively a staggering £23m in expenses last year.

If Ministers will not take action, then the citizens of Great Britain should have a “People’s Referendum” to decide. Do we really need – and can we afford – this group of unelected peers to scrutinise MPs?
