Yet few were as symbolic as this weekend’s all-star game in the Rwanda capital Kigali at a ground which has been dubbed the “Lord’s of East Africa”.

Testimony to the enduring power of sport to change lives for the better, it’s another milestone in the transformation of the strife-torn country after Rwanda’s only cricket pitch, Kicukiro Oval, was one of the most notorious massacre sites during the 1994 genocide.

With huge support from Taylors of Harrogate which has invested more than £1m on social and environment projects – much of its award-winning tea is sourced from plantations here – this whole venture is an example of overseas aid at its very best and how Britain should be making a practical difference. Let’s hope cricket in Rwanda gathers pace so it can host a fully fledged England XI in the near future – that would indeed be a match to savour.
