Fully 91 years later, and with thousands watching not only on TV but via laptops, mobile phones and tablets, Castleford Tigers finally finished top of the table last night.

This is a mining town that lives and breathes rugby league; it’s always done so through good times and bad. Now they are out there on their own and Daryl Powell’s entertaining side achieved the feat playing with pace, power and no little panache. Such has been their dominance, they claimed the League Leaders’ Shield with four regular rounds still remaining. In modern sport’s perverse way, they will not be crowned champions unless they win the Grand Final at Old Trafford on October 7. However, they have already truly lived up to their moniker of Classy Cas and given rugby league a genuine lift in the process.
