YP Letters: Another affront from the BBC to pensioners

THE news that there is the possibility of a £100,000 
per year rise for the ‘stars’ of The Great British Bake Off stars (The Yorkshire Post, January 27) 
will not be a surprise to your readers.

That the spokeswoman for the BBC said that they do 
not comment on speculation 
on pay is also not surprising.

After all, if she had confirmed the increase, it would 
surely have raised an outcry in view of the rumoured idea that the broadcaster is about to launch an appeal for pensioners over the age of 75 to give up their ‘perk’ of a free licence.

Leaving aside the sheer 
gall to ask pensioners to contribute to the pay of the 
many vastly overpaid so-
called stars, the public are also aware of the £34m spent on 
taxis over three years, the 
huge amounts towards 
first class train fares to the 
BBC outpost in what they seem 
to see as that uncivilised Northern city known as 
Salford and the vastly rewarded BBC executives, it beggars 
belief that they are said to 
be thinking of asking celebrities to wheedle money from 
British pensioners who, 
I would remind you, are 
amongst the most poorly rewarded in the whole of 
Europe.
