YP Letters: Paying the penalty for a city shopping trip

ON December 29, I decided to travel to Leeds to do some shopping in the city centre. It was something I had not done for many years.

Unfortunately I have subsequently received a fixed penalty notice from Leeds City Council for a bus lane contravention at 14.59 hours on the above date. Most cities only enforce bus lanes during peak periods!

I have driven tens of thousands of miles, both here in the UK and on the continent during my business working life, and am therefore very experienced at reading the road.

In this particular instance, I didn’t even know I had gone through a bus lane and, according to information on the internet, I am not the only person to do this. It therefore seems to be a nice little earner for Leeds City Council who obviously look on the motorist as a cash cow.

Sorry Leeds city centre retailers, in spite of your excellent service, I will not be visiting you again as I cannot run the risk of another fixed penalty notice and I have also been informing friends and family about the perils possibly awaiting them in your city centre if they should visit. I will in future be shopping in York or Hull, or on the internet.
