YP Letters: Prime Minister's EU reforms reminiscent of Chamberlain

From: Dick Lindley, Altofts, Normanton, West Yorkshire.

I COULD have cried whilst watching the Prime Minister’s performance in the House of Commons regarding his proposed changes to our relationship with our rulers in the EU (The Yorkshire Post, February 4).

I was reminded of Neville Chamberlain on his return from Germany, after his so-called victory in negotiating with Hitler in 1939, waving a piece of paper which he assured the British nation meant peace in our time.

Of course we all know that was a complete sham, like David Cameron’s latest negotiations. We will still have no control over our external borders. We will still continue giving the corrupt treasury of the EU £20bn per year. EU laws will still take precedence over laws passed in our democratically-elected parliament. We will still remain a subject of people living in the western most reaches of the European super state and this once great nation of ours will eventually become just another EU province.

Shame on you Prime Minister, now is the time to find some testosterone and tell the European bully boys to consign the Treaty of Rome and all following treaties to the smallest room in the house where they would at least serve some useful purpose.

From: Kathleen E Garner, Woodford, Stockport, Cheshire.

WELL done GP Taylor (The Yorkshire Post, February 3). You have summed up David Cameron’s EU renegotiation in a nutshell – or perhaps an eggshell, such is the fragility of the situation. The rest is up to us.

From: Thomas W Jefferson, Batty Lane, Howden, Goole.

MIKE Dods (The Yorkshire Post, February 3) seeks to argue that the EU is a democratic organisation because we elect MEPs and our government Ministers sit on the Council of Ministers. But the MEPs have limited powers and none is asked to join the government of the EU. Our government Minister sitting on the Council of Ministers is the one tenuous link our electors have to EU government. But, unless we are in their constituency, neither Mr Dods nor I have access to them if we wish to lobby on a particular issue.

APART from the Prime Minister, does anyone else have a clue what the EU deal he believes he has arrived at, or is it all a David Cameron fantasy? The quicker he flies off on one of his daily plane trips to Europe, on a single ticket, the better!
