I WAS very pleased to read your excellent article about Irene Lofthouse’s event on March 8 commemorating the women of the First World War (The Yorkshire Post, February 28).

Sue Robinson of the group Wenches in Trenches – Roses of No Mans Land – is campaigning for nationwide memorials to the memory of all of the women who served during the First World War.

Many of those women died while serving and they are buried in cemeteries the world over from Australia to Zimbabwe. A book listing those who are buried in France and Belgium is available from Sue’s Group – there are several women from Yorkshire, including Betty Stevenson who is buried in Etaples Military Cemetery.

Betty Stevenson is commemorated on the war memorial in Harrogate but few women are so remembered. Sue Robinson was recently successful in getting the name of one of the women who died added to the war memorial in her home town. There are also women of the First World War buried in cemeteries in Yorkshire. I would love to know how many of them are commemorated on their local war memorials. Well done to Sue and to Irene and all those who are spreading the word about those amazing, inspirational women.
