Ripon hosted a Yorkshire Day parade of mayors.

TWICE in four days, the city of Ripon in the north of our county has provided a marvellous backdrop to summer spectacles which gave heartwarming examples of community spirit.

Blessed by superb weather, the celebrations for Yorkshire Day could not have found a more fitting centrepiece than the historic city.

The parade of 200 mayors, from throughout the county, was a truly impressive sight. It was well supported by crowds watching on the streets and buzzing around stalls on the Market Square.

And what a marvellous gesture on behalf of the cathedral to throw open the Dean’s garden for a ‘Picnic in’t Park’. Priced very sensibly at £2.50 a head, it attracted young families, sometimes excluded from events on cost grounds alone.

It was equally pleasing to see so many residents watching the St Wilfrid’s Procession. The event certainly seemed to dispel any notion that it will struggle to survive, with a very healthy number of floats and enthusiastic spectators cheering at the roadside.

Many thanks for the hard work of all those who played a part in the events. Their enthusiasm and community spirit are an example to us all, and they can be very pleased with their efforts.
