YP Letters: Why free trade will carry on quite happily outside the EU

THE UK can quite happily exist without having to kowtow to a federal Europe. We can quite easily trade with other nations without having our hands tied behind our backs due to stupid and ill-thought-out legislation from Brussels. The fact is that we import more from Europe than we export, so logic tells us they need to continue trading with us.

Yes, I voted to join the EU in the 70s – it was logical to trade with other nations close by.

However I did not vote to join a community that would result in us losing all power to a central body that is not only costing us money but is corrupt and totally illogical in its legislation. Quite frankly the EU has become too large to operate sensibly. It is no longer fit for purpose, and the sooner we get out the better!

From: Peter Hyde, Driffield.

WHO do you think you are kidding Mr Cameron if you if you think England can be conned? We can vote against more EU and about that there is little you can do. You may control your Cabinet with lots of little threats but the electorate can still foil you.

From: D Wood, Howden.

WITH the future of our country at stake, I find it inconceivable that Karren Brady’s only concern and reason for wanting to stay in the EU is based on being able to get easy access to grossly overpaid mediocre foregin footballers, as though the very future of our country depended upon it (The Yorkshire Post, February 1). Surely who governs our country is of far more importance; do we want to be governed by the German- dominated EU who we do not elect and cannot remove, or do we want a purely British Government which we vote in and can remove if they do not do the job properly?

Karren Brady’s only claim to fame is running a football club whose fixtures are provided
by the league and most of
whose cash comes from the television.

Football will survive perfectly well outside the EU – and
without so many foreign players England might have a better chance of winning the World Cup.

From: John Watson, Leyburn.

I DISPUTE Karren Brady’s argument on football. Today we have oligarchs and oil barons coming here and buying up clubs, and it is they who can afford the most expensive players. The whole set-up is unfair to the young people Karren Brady is talking about.
