Abu Qatada should be deported as court ruling defies logic

From: John Watson, Hutton Hill, Leyburn.

WHY has the radical Muslim cleric Abu Qatada been allowed to stay in this country instead of being deported?

It is, of course, the decision of a court ruling, emanating from the European Court of Human Rights, which defies all logic.

We have in this country two young men who are awaiting deportation to the United States for lesser crimes which are minor compared to those of the cleric. They are crimes all the same and I don’t have a lot of sympathy with their plight, but they are not a danger to the State.

There was a time when this great nation of ours , which once taught the rest of the world about democracy and the rule of law, would have taken no notice of such a court. But how things have changed. We are now not masters in our own backyard.

I bet there is not one member of that court whose country has been humiliated time and time again like we have with innocent civilians being murdered by terrorist bombs, being regarded as infidels, and generally looked upon as second class just because we don’t worship the same God.

This man Abu Qatada has been trying to foment unrest and terrorism among young radicals of his faith as an immigrant to our country. In my book, that is treason and he would have been shot if it had been wartime.

IT is the first priority of any Government to protect the people of that country (Yorkshire Post, February 8).

Home Secretary Theresa May is right to be annoyed at the ruling on muslim cleric Abu Qatada, and she is right to say terrorists should be in jail, and foreign terrorists should be in a jail as far away from here as possible.

Abu Qatada came into our country on a false passport, and should have been expelled for that crime.

He is a known supporter of Osama bin Laden and al-Qaida, and has preached hate. He is no democrat and no lover of Britain – more good reasons for deportation.

Britain should either withdraw from the ECHR club or simply do, as France and Italy have done, and ignore their rulings and get rid of Abu Qatada tomorrow.

I DO agree with Theresa May about the deportation of Abu Qatada (Yorkshire Post, February 8).

It is a disgrace that the Government is being prevented from protecting the people of this country by the ruling of a court in another country.

If the courts in Strasbourg are so concerned about his welfare if he is sent to Jordan, perhaps we should send him to Strasbourg, and let them have the problem and expense of keeping him safe.

THE Romans had a principle, Salus populi suprema lex – the safety of the people in the highest law.

It is time that our judges abided by it.
