Action plan needed to stop roads clogging up

From: S Jenkinson, Hunter House Road, Sheffield.

Recently I made an interesting bus journey in Sheffield from Herries Road/Moonshine Lane via Southey, Firth Park, Concord Park and Wincobank before it called at Meadowhall on the way to the city centre.

What interested me was how the bus driver coped with acute left-hand turns at junctions and frequently waiting for a clear passage between cars parked on both sides of a road, even at bus stops. I admired the driver’s skill and patience.

Having started my life as a pedestrian, then a cyclist for 20 years and later a car driver until returning to being just a pedestrian, I have noticed in recent years how much bigger and wider the car manufacturers are making their new car models.

This results in even less room for passing vehicles where cars are parked on both sides of our narrow roads on most estates in this city.

I am sure Sheffield is not unique. The increase in our car ownership will inevitably make matters worse.

Where will all these cars park at night? Two car families will not have room outside the many terrace houses, or even the many semi-detached houses without a garage.

And when older teenage children require their own car space, what is the answer? This is a problem that is not going away without an action plan to prevent the clogging up of all road travel.

Maybe getting people to learn to walk again and use buses up the hills could help. It is a habit that is easy to get into and slimmer, fitter bodies would result.
