Appalled over care for autistic

From: Mrs Lorna Johnson, Ashburn Way, Wetherby.

I AM extremely concerned about the current state of the care system in this area and the country as a whole. It is not only failing the elderly but those with illnesses and disabilities alike.

We should no longer tolerate a system which leaves many with no support and others with poor quality services. A survey by the National Autistic Society found that two-thirds of adults with autism do not have the support they need and, as a result, a third had developed mental health problems.

Recently, Andrew Dilnot released a report on how the system can be improved. As a local resident and a supporter of The National Autistic Society, I would like to appeal to our local MPs to bring this issue to parliament and help make Dilnot’s suggestions a reality.

Without this, people will continue to be left to cope without the support they desperately need.

How can we believe UN?

From: David Quarrie, Lynden Way, Holgate, York.

IN its latest report, Unicef (Yorkshire Post, September 15) says that British children receive the least time with their parents, are given too many material items of consumerism as an alternative to quality time with their Mum and Dad, and are less happy than most other European children.

I have no way of knowing whether this is true or not, and I would like to know how Unicef obtained its’ information. I also notice that this UN Organisation does not offer any answers to this problem or how we in Britain might rectify the situation.

MPs’ fowl play

FURTHER to the remarks by Dai Woosnam (Yorkshire Post, September 15), does he really believe that MPs will voluntarily support a reduction in their number? As Jim Callaghan said about the SNP back in 1979, it’d be like turkeys voting for Christmas.
