April 13: Sermons in English will ensure transparency

From: Bob Watson,Springfield Road, Baildon.

MUSLIM community leaders have rightly highlighted a significant problem whereby some of their clerics conduct sermons entirely in Urdu (The Yorkshire Post, April 8).

The report went on to say that some imams speak no English at all which, in this day and age, is surely ridiculous?

Who are these people who are living in this country, but appear to have no interest in learning or speaking the English language?

As Mehboob Khan, the former leader of Kirklees Council, says: “Far too many imams solely rely on Urdu.” Perhaps the community leaders should
only accept imams in any mosques who can and will speak English?

The continuing problems with community cohesion are simply not helped by these people, and we really need Muslim leaders to address this as a matter of urgency.

This would hopefully also help to avoid the unfortunate radicalisation of some young people as has sadly been seen recently.

If everything were to be conducted openly in English, then surely anything untoward that was happening would
be much more readily apparent.
